online meeting this week

Readings

We've learned many pieces and bits and we've used many multi-media online tools, so this week we will learn about online course design/instructional design in a more structural manner. The conceptual process of creating an online course is similar to a traditional classroom-based course.
Gagne's (1983) Nine Events of Instruction is a classical instructional design that we often use in creating online course. This may give you an head start in designing an online course.
  1. Gain attention
  2. Inform learners of objectives
  3. Stimulate recall of prior learning
  4. Present the content
  5. Provide “learning guidance”
  6. Elicit performance (practice).
  7. Provide feedback
  8. Assess performance
  9. Enhance retention and transfer to the job
Here are websites that provide a further explanation of how this model can be applied.

*Always keep this model in mind when you try to design any online course.

However, more considerations must be taken especially concerning the use of technology to promote student learning. The following articles provide more specific tips and caveats on designing online courses.

Website Development

weeblylogo.pngIn this week, you are going to create a personal website using a drag-and-drop website development tool- www.weebly.com. This is a very easy-to-use tool that can be used to do a wide variety of things, including an online course design. This assignment aims to help you familiarize yourself with weebly and equip you with fundamental website development skills.
Some built-in tutorials of weebly can be found HERE.

A short demo of Weebly that I promised to do :)

You can have two options for the weekly assignment, one is to use weebly to make a personal website, another is to make a class site. You can make your own decision.
Option 1:
1. You have to include the following elements on your navigation bar.
  • About me
  • My Resume
  • My Beliefs
  • My Tech Projects
  • Contact me
  • You're free to include more elements but these are the required ones for this assignment.
2. About me
Write a short introduction to let your audience know a little about you. Attach a photo of you.
3. My Resume
1-2 page professional resume that you would use when you're on the job market.
4. My Beliefs
Write a few paragraphs on your beliefs as an educator who uses technology for improving student learning and your beliefs about using technology in the classroom.
Add a quote that relates to some element of your philosophy and beliefs.
5. My Tech Projects
Embed at least one of your multimedia projects that you created. It could be graphics, videos, audios, and etc.
6. Contact me
Provide your contact info such as Name and Address (campus / permanent); Phone numbers (cell, dorm, home); e-mail addresses

Option 2:
Alternatively, you can also create your weebly website as a "class" website for your future class, if you plan to create one in the future or for your final project. In that case, you need to create one web page "About me" and include all the content above (short self- intro, resume, beliefs, tech projects) under that specific page (See here as an example).
For a "class" website, you should also modify your navigation bar. You can use a weekly format (like what you did in wikispace) or use more generic format (content, assignments, resources, etc). You can add the real content later. For this assignment, your real content is only limited to your short self- intro, resume, beliefs, tech projects, and contacts.
Some "class" website examples:

http://michaelmcknight.weebly.com/index.html
http://bentleyjessica.weebly.com/
http://mrarcarosmathclass.weebly.com/index.html
http://physicalscience203.weebly.com/

Be SURE to click on "Publish" in the upper right corner to make the edits to your site live online. Then click to visit the address that comes up and copy and paste that URL in BB (it should be in the following format: www.nameofyoursite.weebly.com)

ECOT videos 2

Below are the links to another set of ECOT online teaching videos. You can choose one or more to watch. More is encouraged. You will again need to fill out the RTOP form (same form as last time- you don't have to download again if you saved the empty one.) as what you did for the first set of ECOT videos.

Blog

Reflect on the ECOT videos you watched this week and continue to think about the issue of online teaching. You may want to consider the following questions when you write your blog:
  1. How does this set of videos differ from the first one? Have your views of online teaching changed over time?
  2. What are the questions and concerns you have or what more do you want to know about online teaching?
  3. Whether you teach in a full-time online school or in a traditional brick and mortar school, why is it important for you to learn how to engage learners from a distance?
  4. Where/when might these skills be needed in your future careers?
  5. What might a classroom look like in 2020? 2030?

Checklist

1. Weebly site
2. Blog
3. ECOT RTOP form
4. Sign-up check-up presentation time for final project
